*Thank you, SCNN, for giving me this forum in which to express my opinion*
As R. Kelly’s #1 fan, I felt it was extremely important to break my silence and speak up for the twenty-first century’s greatest R&B artist. This is the man who brought us “Trapped in the Closet,” a song about his girl being up in the club and cheating on him. Well, how can she be 13 if she’s up in the club? She can’t, people. She can’t.
R. Kelly’s “Ignition Remix” is the generation-defining song of the early 2000s. I remember one night in college, I was at a bar called “The Cave” drinking appletinis getting my flirt on, when this song came on. I was singing, “sippin’ on coke and rum, I’m like so what I’m drunk” and suddenly I realized, YES. I am like SO WHAT, and we post 9-11 twentysomethings in America, we’re ALL like “so what? I’m drunk.” So what. There has never been a more descriptive and elegant way of describing the collective unconscious and its feeling of repression and unease. Never.
R. Kelly made me believe I can fly. No man with such a beautiful heart could have sex with a child and then pee on her.
Or, if he did, I’m sure it was an accident.
