Glendale, CA - SCNN sat down this week with Nicole Richie in the home she shares with Baby Daddy and Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, to dish about diaper-changing and how motherhood has made her complexion amazing.
SCNN: Nicole! You look fabulous, just five months after giving birth you are back to your prebaby weight!
Nicole Richie: Thanks! The day after I had Harlow I had surgery to remove all the milk glands in my breasts, to keep them from swelling up. I also had some of my spine removed, because I really felt I was getting too tall.
SCNN: Wow, you’re so candid about your surgeries!
NR: Well, I just want new moms out there to know their options. Having babies doesn’t have to ruin your life. When I first realized I was pregnant, I was like, great. I have to have it because it will save my reputation after that DUI thing, but I was scared, you know? I didn’t want to change my lifestyle. But then I was like, all the A-listers are pregnant, so I should just embrace the pregnancy as I would the latest handbag.
SCNN: Definitely. Well you are positively glowing! What’s been the craziest part of dealing with a newborn?
NR: Oh my God. Me and Joel spent days trying to find a good nanny! You wouldn’t believe how difficult it is to hire one. Joel would be like, well what about this one and I’d be like, ew! She has a nasty mole, or her hair color is so last season, or she looks like she’d steal my jewelry. It’s been really tough but we now we have a staff of three wonderful women who are totally not ugly and who stay with Harlow twenty-four seven.
SCNN: Lucky you! Have they been teaching you the basics?
NR: No. Wait, basics about what?
SCNN: About raising a child. Making formula?
NR: Oh, no.
SCNN: Changing diapers?
NR: Gross, no. I told my publicist there was no way I would change diapers! I’ve just played with her a couple times and taken her for walks after she’s already asleep. It’s crazy, I never thought I could love another human being as much as I love Harlow. She is the perfect baby whenever I see her.
SCNN: Wow it sounds like everything is going so smoothly! What’s on your horizon now?
NR: Well I have a book coming out called Not Without My Baby: The Nicole Richie Pregnancy Story. It’ll have like tips and stuff, and it’ll talk about difficulties I had with the pregnancy, like not being able to wear my six-inch Christian Louboutins and losing my taste for champagne. Oh, and I shouldn’t talk about it but we’re looking into getting me my own show, where I’ll talk to Good Charlotte fans and people who have read my book, and like, experts on stuff.
SCNN: Amazing! You are incredible, how you manage to juggle life, work, and family. A lot of mothers could take a page from your book.
NR: Well hopefully they will! My book, Not Without My Baby, comes out in June, so everyone should be sure to grab a copy. They can read it at the Jersey Shore, or wherever it is poor people spend their summers.
SCNN: You’re fabulous! Can we have your autograph?
