NEW YORK, NY — In a unique gesture, the members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association of America took out a full page ad in the sports section of USA Today, apologizing for “forgetting about David Beckham.”
Beckham is one of the world’s most recognizable stars, and came to America amid great fanfare to play in Major League Soccer. Hoopla followed him everywhere as he signed a deal with the league’s Los Angeles Galaxy that was reported to be worth nearly $250 million, including endorsements, bonuses and incentives.
Each of the Galaxy’s games were on television, with Hollywood stars and famous athletes joining the crowd to watch Beckham play. Until he didn’t.
Unfortunately, the world’s most famous soccer star got injured, and instead of being on the field, people came to the games and watched him sit on the bench, rooting for his team. The hype quickly died down and sports news in America went on as usual.
And the news kept going on as usual, with no mention of the MLS at all. The league had it’s postseason, and Los Angeles was not a part of it, so media coverage was bare. Then the offseason happened, then the regular season began. And still, nothing. This was surprising to many, given the unbelievable media presence of the last MLS season.
Last week, after being contacted by MLS commissioner Don Garber, the NSSA had a startling realization - they had collectively forgotten Beckham was in America and playing soccer.
According to sources, this led to a meeting of the minds, who thought that the right thing to do was a public apology. In part, it read, “The NSSA would like to apologize for completely forgetting about David Beckham. We realize there are a few people out there who enjoy watching soccer, and had we remembered about the MLS, we surely would have had a representative attend at least one game.”
