Just when you thought you had seen the last of Jay and Silent Bob, the duo is back in “Jay and Silent Bob Go To Rehab“. The film chronicles the latest adventures of the pot smoking/drug selling twosome played by Jason Mewes and director Kevin Smith.
Smith was clearly going in a different direction on this film, moving away from the unfunny comedy genre he has become such an important part of. He himself told SCNN he knew it was time for a change.
“You make a movie like ‘Mallrats’ and you kinda figure you can just coast through the rest of your career,” Smith said. “Wrong. Put Ben Affleck in too many of your movies and people forget you used to be cool and funny. Trust me.”
As you could guess by the title, this film follows the duo’s arrest for drug trafficking and subsequent six-month stint in rehab. While that sounds serious, there are plenty of laughs in this odd couple caper.
The film is as much an homage to the Ernest films of the early 1990s as it is a sequel to the 2001 film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. After all, just because a film centers around the very serious drug rehab process, that doesn’t mean there can’t be a couple of fart jokes included as well.
“Imagine ‘Ernest Scared Stupid’ with a very strong don’t do drugs message,” Smith said. “It’s easily the most socially conscious movie you’ll see this summer.”
In the end, some of the jokes hit the mark but the 30-minute rehab love scene between Jay and pop star Amy Winehouse might be the most disgusting thing ever filmed. Rating: ½ star.
